What is Autism?

Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. It is characterised by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills and social abilities, and also by repetitive behaviours. Symptoms range from very mild to severe. There is no cure yet for autism, but early diagnosis and intervention improves outcomes. With appropriate specialised education, behavioural and biomedical interventions coupled with an understanding community and adequate support services, most persons with autism can become productive, happy citizens.

About our work through REACH

REACH (Resources and Education for Autism and related Challenges) is a non-profit organisation that aims to increase autism awareness and education in The Bahamas by providing free services and resources to children and families affected by autism.

Established as an advocacy and support group of those with Autism, REACH provides leadership and assistance to families, schools and the community. In particular, our objective is to provide parents with comprehensive knowledge and tools in all areas of this neurobiological disorder.

Our Mission

Autism has quickly become one of the fastest and more common of the neurobiological disorders, which is often characterised by impaired social interaction and communication. Our goal is to help you discover more of what Autism is, what are the effects and how it can affect you.

As Chairman of REACH, Dwayne Gibson’s passion is to lobby for additional resources on behalf of the disabled, particularly those on the Autism spectrum. He remains committed to the fight for greater acceptance and inclusion of those in the Autism community.

As an advocate for Autism awareness and Chairman of Reach, Dwayne Gibson’s vision is to see that the educational and vocational training that typical children receive in the public sector also encompasses improved health care entry and sensitivity when attending healthcare facilities and overall tolerance.

Salvation Army

Through our outreach program, the team at Gibson & Associates have donated food and clothing as well as sanitation and hygiene items amid the COVID pandemic.
